History

For well over a century, Heceta Head Lighthouse has helped mariners navigate the Pacific Ocean’s tumultuous currents and journey along the Oregon coast. Constructed on the isolated Heceta Head, between 1892 and 1893, the cliff-top lighthouse emitted its first beam of light on March 30, 1894. Now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Heceta Head Lighthouse is a West Coast treasure. Seen 21 miles from land, the lighthouse is rated the strongest light on the Oregon coast.

FAQs

  • Can I hike to the Lighthouse?

From the parking lot Heceta Head State Park, you can hike an easy ½ mile trail that climbs 150 feet up the cliff to the historic lighthouse and assistant keeper's house. Park of a 7-mile network in the state park, the trail offers amazing views of the vast ocean, cove and beach. You can also hike down to the beach, but watch out for sneaker waves, strong tidal currents and logs in the surf.
  • Does Heceta Head Lighthouse offer tours?

Join daily guided tours of the Lighthouse and Keeper’s House at the Interpretive Center. Led by knowledgeable docents, free guided tours are given March through October 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the lighthouse observation area is open all year during park hours. You can also arrange personal tours throughout the year for individuals and school and historic groups by calling 800-551-6949. Tours are free, but donations for restoration and interpretive projects are appreciated. There is a $5 fee for day use parking.
